Candidates for Treasurer Sought
The Philadelphia Bar Association is seeking candidates to fill the position of Treasurer, following the resignation of Jeffrey M. Lindy.
Expression of interest for the position will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, in advance of the Thursday, Jan. 29 Board of Governors meeting. If there is a contest for any position, candidates will be given the opportunity to briefly address the full Board of Governors and a vote by secret ballot will follow. Mr. Lindy resigned to run for elective office in Montgomery County.
According to Section 215G of the Association's bylaws, any vacancy in the office of Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary or Assistant Treasurer, or of an elected member of the Board, shall be filled by appointment of the Board, to serve until the next Annual Meeting and until a successor is qualified. If the Assistant Treasurer is elected to the position, or a current Board member is elected to either the Treasurer's position or that of Assistant Treasurer, that vacated position will be filled.

False Claims Act Roundup Today
David Laigaie will present a roundup on the False Claims Act at today's (Thursday, Jan. 22) meeting of the Health Care Law Committee.
Last year, the Department of Justice collected more than $1.35 billion in FCA cases, more than $1 billion of which came from health care providers and suppliers. In theory, health care lawyers should spend hours keeping abreast of the ever changing False Claims Act, its daily court interpretations, shifts in DoJ and HHS enforcement strategies and proposed Congressional amendments. In practice, who has the time? In this presentation, Laigaie will describe current trends in FCA enforcement, discuss recent notable FCA decisions and explain proposed legislative changes to the law. Thus, in the time it takes to eat lunch, attendees will come up to speed on this critical topic.

Securities Regulation Lunchtime CLE Jan. 27
The Securities Regulation Committee of the Business Law Section will host the lunchtime CLE "Securities Liability in Turbulent Times: Practical Responses to a Changing Landscape" on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
This program will address the following topics: New Liability Developments: Targets and Theories; Director and Officer Liability Coverage Issues; Best Practices for Corporate Governance and Disclosure; and The Future Face of Securities Regulation. Panelists include Jeffrey A. Dailey, Graham R. Laub, H. Marc Tepper and Andrew L. Zivitz. The program will be moderated by Richard A. Levan.

Business Law Section Annual Reception Jan. 27
Stephen M. Goodman, a partner with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, will receive the Business Law Section's Dennis H. Replansky Memorial Award at the Section's Annual Reception on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
The Section established the award in recognition of Dennis Replansky's career as a lawyer and his contributions to legal, civic, religious and other charitable causes. Replansky was a 51-year-old senior partner at Blank Rome Comisky & McCauley when he died in March 1994. He was a former chair of the Business Law Section.
The Section will honor Marc J. Zucker of the Business Litigation Committee as Committee Chair of the Year at the event, while the Bankruptcy Committee will be recognized as the Section's Committee of the Year.

Coaches, Judges Needed for Mock Trial Competition
Volunteer coaches and judges are needed for the 2009 John S. Bradway Philadelphia High School Mock Trial Competition, which is run by Temple University Beasley School of Law and the Young Lawyers Division.
The rounds of competition will take place Jan. 26 through Feb. 28. If you have volunteered in the past, we thank you and hope that you will do so this year. If you have not yet volunteered for the Mock Trial Competition, we encourage you to do so.
As a coach, you would meet and communicate with the students to prepare for the competition. As a judge, you can choose to fill as many time slots as your schedule will allow and you do not need trial experience to participate. Informal Admonition Re-enactment CLE Feb. 10
Barbara S. Rosenberg and Paul J. Kazaras will present the CLE program "A Re-enactment of an Informal Admonition" at the Tuesday, Feb. 10 meeting of the Professional Responsibility Committee.
Barbara S. Rosenberg, a former assistant disciplinary counsel for the Disciplinary Board of Pennsylvania and current Co-Chair of the Professional Responsibility Committee will lead both a discussion of the facts and circumstances that have resulted in an attorney receiving an informal admonition (facts and the rule violations involved) and will also participate with Kazaras and other Committee members in a re-enactment of the rendering of an informal admonition.
The program has been approved for 1 ethics CLE credit. Participants wishing to receive the CLE credit will be required to pay a fee of $25 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for more than five years, and $20 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for less than five years. Get Admitted to U.S. Supreme Court May 4
The Philadelphia Bar Association will move up to 50 of our members for admission to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court on Monday, May 4. The admission ceremony will be made to the full court sitting in Washington, D.C.
The court's requirements for a group admission ceremony are very rigid. To review these requirements and to download the forms for admission please visit the Supreme Court's web site at supremecourtus.gov
. Select the Bar Admissions tab on the left-hand side and this will bring you to the link for the Bar Admissions Form and Bar Admissions Instructions. Please read the instructions carefully. Once you have determined that you are eligible for admission, please print out and complete the Admission Form. The instructions and guidelines are very specific and must be followed scrupulously. Do not fold the application or use staples. Use paper clips only.
Once you have successfully completed the Admission Form, please mail it along with a check for $200 made payable to the Philadelphia Bar Association to: Dawn Petit, 1101 Market Street, 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107. Do not send the application directly to the Supreme Court.
The event will be on a first-come, first-served basis and all applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 16, 2009.

Public Interest Training Sessions Set
Philadelphia VIP and the Pennsylvania Farmworker Project of Philadelphia Legal Assistance are seeking volunteers to assist low-income clients with preparing their annual tax returns at the Low Income Taxpayer Clinics, which will be held in February and April 2009. New volunteers may attend one of three free training seminars prior to working at the tax clinic, which will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 27 (6 - 9:30 p.m.), Thursday, Jan. 29 (6 - 9:30 p.m.), and Saturday, Jan. 31 (1 - 4:30 p.m.), at Philadelphia VIP, 42 S. 15th St., 4th Floor. The Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic is an initiative to educate local migrant workers on their rights as taxpayers and involve area law students and legal professionals with public interest legal work. The clinic sessions are held on Saturdays throughout the tax season, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in Kennett Square, Pa. (transportation to and from the clinics is available and free breakfast and lunch provided). LMA Business Development Seminar Jan. 22
The Legal Marketing Association – Metropolitan Philadelphia Chapter is ready to ring in the New Year by offering opportunities for law firms to strengthen their business development efforts and to attend a professional networking event that's sure to "bowl" them over.
As economic conditions change, lawyers need to re-evaluate their business plans. The best business plans not only target a promising niche, but also identify efficient tactics to make the best use of lawyers' limited marketing time, to build relationships, and to improve follow-up.
On Thursday, Jan. 22, the LMA will host "Eight Steps to a Better Business Plan," a one-hour workshop that will provide practical tips and tools to help lawyers develop and implement better business plans by focusing on eight steps. Each participant will also receive "The LegalBizDev Guide to Business Plans," a .pdf file including sample formats for typical plans and detailed advice to maximize results.
The program speaker will be Jim Hassett, founder of LegalBizDev, a company that helps lawyers to develop new business more quickly by applying best practices from other law firms and from other professions. With 20 years of experience as a sales trainer and consultant to companies from American Express to Zurich Financial Services, Jim has published seven books (including Legal Business Development: A Step-by-Step Guide and The LegalBizDev Desk Reference™) and more than 70 articles in publications ranging from The New York Times Magazine to Law Firm Inc. and Strategies: The Journal of Legal Marketing. He speaks frequently at law firms, and at professional meetings, including the Massachusetts Bar, and the New York, New England, Southeastern and Vancouver chapters of the Legal Marketing Association. He has a Ph.D. from Harvard University and is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychology at Boston University. Judges Needed for High School Moot Court Competition
Drexel University Earle Mack School of Law and University of Pennsylvania Law School are sponsoring the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project's High School Moot Court competition.
Through this project, Drexel and Penn Law students go out to Philadelphia public high schools and teach the high school students about their rights and responsibilities under the Constitution. One of the highlights of the project is a constitutional law moot court competition for the high school students. This year, the problem revolves around a First Amendment issue regarding students' free speech rights in schools.
The Philadelphia competition will be held Jan. 30 at Penn Law School. The eight winners of that competition will compete in a national competition which will be held at Drexel and Penn Law during the weekend of March 21.
