Brennan Jr. Distinguished Jurist Award and Roberta D. Liebenberg will be presented with the Sandra Day O'Connor Award.

A panel of women executives from across Philadelphia will discuss the role and future of female leaders at the Quarterly Meeting and Luncheon on Monday, Oct. 20.

Moderated by CBS 3 Eyewitness News evening weekend anchor, Mary Stoker Smith, panelists include Dr. Arlene Ackerman, CEO/superintendent, School District of Philadelphia; Nina M. Gussack, chair, executive committee, Pepper Hamilton LLP; Tara Weiner, managing partner of the Philadelphia office of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP; and Ahmeenah Young, president and CEO, Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority.

Nomination Deadline for Bar Election is Today

The deadline for individuals wishing to be nominated for Bar Association offices is today (Thursday, Oct. 9) at 5 p.m. Offices for which candidates are being solicited are Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and five seats on the Board of Governors. Each Board seat carries a three-year term. Association members may become candidates for any of these offices by filing with the Secretary, at least 60 days prior to the Dec. 8, 2008 Annual Meeting, nominations in writing which, for candidates of the Board, must be signed by at least 25 members who are entitled to vote; for candidates for Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer, shall be signed by at least 35 members who are entitled to vote; and for candidates for Vice-Chancellor, shall be signed by at least 100 members who are entitled to vote.

Federal Court Technology Update Oct. 14

The Federal Court Committee will receive an update on the court's technology courtrooms and how they are being used at a special meeting in the Green Federal Building on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 12 p.m.

The program will feature remarks by Chief Judge Harvey Bartle III and Clerk Michael Kunz. The panel discussion on courtroom technology will be led by Judge Lawrence F. Stengel, Magistrate Judge Elizabeth T. Hey and Michael Hearn, courtroom technology coordinator in the clerk's office. Judge Mary McLaughlin will present a report on the court's pro bono panels.

Technology - Skills for Success Oct. 14

Daniel J. Siegel will present "Technology - Skills for Success" on Tuesday, Oct. 14 as part of the Associate Training Program Business Skills Series.

From e-filing to metadata to case management to e-discovery, technology encompasses every aspect of the practice of law. In this course, attorney and legal technology expert Dan Siegel will provide an overview of the technology available to attorneys and their staffs, and how they can use technology to provide better client services.

YLD Family Fall Festival Oct. 19 at Zoo

The Young Lawyers Division will hold its 2008 Family Fall Festival on Sunday, Oct. 19 at the Philadelphia Zoo, 3400 Girard Ave.

Admission includes all-day access to the zoo between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The YLD Family Fall Festival event will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Peacock Pavilion and includes a picnic BBQ with dessert. Access to Pavilion is available between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Antitrust Law Committee CLE Oct. 22

The Business Law Section's Antitrust Law Committee will present the CLE program "Antitrust Division Criminal Enforcement Update and Organizational Cooperation in Criminal Antitrust Investigations" on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Lucy P. McClain and Robert E. Connolly of the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division will be panelists for the program, which will be moderated by Judith F. Olson.

During this lunchtime CLE, this distinguished panel will discuss current trends in criminal antitrust enforcement, including criminal statistics, novel plea agreements such as those from the Division’s marine hose investigation, charging criminal antitrust offenses and obstruction of justice prosecutions. The panelists will also describe the application in criminal antitrust investigations of the August 2008 revisions to “Department of Justice’s Principles of Federal Prosecution of Business Prosecution,” including the impact on the attorney-client privilege and work product doctrine and the corporate advancement of attorneys’ fees to employees.

Women in IP to Hold First Meeting Oct. 22

The Intellectual Property Committee's Women in IP Subcommittee will hold its inaugural meeting Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 12 p.m. at the offices of Stradley Ronon, 2005 Market Street, 26th Floor.

The mission of the committee is to provide networking and programmatic opportunities for Philadelphia area women IP lawyers, particularly those in private practice and in-house. Pro Bono Opportunities Day Oct. 22

Philadelphia VIP, the hub of pro bono legal services in Philadelphia, will hold its annual training event, Pro Bono Opportunities Day, on Wednesday, Oct. 22. From first-year associates new to the practice of law, to experienced practitioners new to pro bono, we invite all attorneys to attend our signature training seminar and learn how to use their legal experience to help those most in need in our community.

Training sessions for the day are available to professionals from all areas of practice and include Probate Procedures, Name Change and Birth Certificate Amendments, Consumer Cases, and Legal Wills. Following the training event, VIP offers each participant the opportunity to take a pro bono case, and each attorney who attends the seminar and accepts a case will earn two substantive CLE credits. Nominations Sought for 2008 Wachovia Fidelity Award

Nominations are now being accepted for the Philadelphia Bar Association's 2008 Wachovia Fidelity Award. Nominations should be made in writing. Please include a detailed statement setting forth information and reasons why you are recommending the nominee for this award. The deadline for receipt of nominations is 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, 2008.

The criteria for the award are:

1. Significant accomplishments in improving the administration of justice (preferably in Philadelphia).

3. Distinguished service consistently rendered over a considerable period of time or a single outstanding achievement in a particular year. (The fact that this single achievement may have occurred some years ago in not material so long as it has not been recognized.)

4. The accomplishment must arise from voluntary activities rather than for service rendered as a paid professional.

5. It is preferred that the recipient be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association not now in public office or directly involved with the court operations or any other public service activity.

Associate Dissatisfaction - Myth or Reality Oct. 27

The Law Practice Management Division will present "Associate Dissatisfaction: Myth or Reality" on Monday, Oct. 27.

After first examining just how prevalent - or not - the problem is inside of law firms, we will take a look at recently conducted surveys and studies to gain a grasp of the issues raised by associates. Then, we will analyze how much "fault" or blame lies with the firms and how much might lie with the associates, themselves. Finally, we will work together to identify practical responses to the challenges of associate dissatisfaction. Chancellor's Forum on Comparative Judicial Selection Oct. 29

The International Law Committee and the British American Business Council will co-host the Chancellor's Forum "Comparative Judicial Selection: Learning from the British and American Systems" on Wednesday, Oct. 29.

The guest speaker will be Sir Robin Ernest Auld, a former judge on the English Court of Appeals who also served as vice chair of the Judicial Appointments Commission during its efforts to increase responsiveness and diversity of the British Courts. Candidates Sought for YLD Executive Committee

Pursuant to the YLD Bylaws, every year seven new members are elected to serve three-year terms on the Executive Committee. This year's Election will take place on Dec. 8, 2008, in conjunction with the Association's Annual Meeting. The deadline for submitting your material is 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008.

Any Voting Member of the Division shall be eligible for election to the Executive Committee provided, however, that the term of office for which the individual runs shall not extend beyond his or her membership in the Division. You are eligible if you are 37 years of age or less in the year 2011, or if you are older than 37, you will not be celebrating more than your third year of practice in 2011. The Nominating Petition and Personal Statement must be returned to the offices of the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., 11th Floor, no later than 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008. At 5 p.m. that same day, we will have an information meeting in the 10th Floor Board Room at the Bar Association where ballot positions will be drawn.

Nomination Deadline for Hampton Award is Oct. 31

The Workers' Compensation Section is now accepting nominations for the 2008 Martha Hampton Award. This is the 9th year that the award is being presented. The award is given to an attorney or judge who best exemplifies Martha's unique compassion and dedication to her clients, her professionalism, scholarship and good will with her peers. Past winners have included counsel from both sides of the aisle as well as members of the bench.

This year's committee includes Marc S. Jacobs, Judge Aida Louise Harris, Kenneth M. Kapner and Paul A. Pauciulo. Also, a charitable contribution is made each year by Galfand Berger, on behalf of the Section, to Kids Chance, an organization helping youngsters who have lost a parent due to a work related injury to gain a higher level of education. Public Interest Section Seeks Hamilton Nominees

The Public Interest Section is accepting nominations for the annual Andrew Hamilton Award. Nominees must be a legal services advocate or public defender employed by, or associated with, an organization whose purpose is to serve persons who cannot afford to pay for legal representation, or be a public-interest lawyer working with a nonprofit organization serving a charitable or public interest purpose.

In addition, nominees must have substantial experience in legal services, indigent defense or public interest law and must currently be employed in one of these capacities. Members of the selection committee will consider such factors as personal vision and commitment; critical nature of the problems addressed by the nominee's advocacy; innovative nature of the nominee's work; outcomes and results achieved through effective advocacy; the difficulty of achievement; and community commitment.

Nominations are encouraged and should include the individual's name, address and a brief statement describing his or her qualifications. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Oct. 31. APABAPA Annual Banquet Oct. 17 at Joy Tsin Lau

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Pennsylvania will hold its Annual Banquet on Friday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. at Joy Tsin Lau, 1026 Race St.

The keynote speaker is Andrew Patel, a criminal defense attorney who recently represented Jose Padilla, the first American citizen in the war against terrorism to be held as an enemy combatant. Nydia Han, an investigative reporter for WPVI-TV/6ABC Action News, will be the mistress of ceremonies.

Attorneys Needed to Help Homeowners Facing Foreclosure

Pro bono attorneys are needed to help low-income homeowners facing foreclosure in a new pilot program requiring conciliation conferences.

Through the Residential Mortgage Foreclosures Diversion Pilot Program, instituted in April by Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas President Judge C. Darnell Jones II and Judge Annette M. Rizzo, hundreds of homeowners will be offered free housing counseling in advance of this conciliation conference and an opportunity to negotiate to save their homes.

This diversion program has garnered national attention but will need the involvement of pro bono attorneys to help clients work out an affordable loan modification or payment arrangement.

There are two ways to get involved. Volunteer attorneys who want to participate in the limited representation of borrowers (These volunteers should expect to spend one morning or afternoon per month at a conciliation conference session at court assisting walk-in clients. Volunteers may choose to continue to assist the client they have met that day);and volunteer attorneys who want to assist clients in mortgage foreclosure litigation cases from start to finish.

A training session will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Blank Rome LLP, 130 N. 18th St., in the Comisky Conference Center, and will include Judge Rizzo as well as borrowers' and lenders' attorneys. The training for limited representation runs from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Full representation training runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attorneys will receive two or five hours of free substantive CLE credit if they participate in the conferences or take a case. FJD Seeks Pro Bono Roll of Honor Nominees

The First Judicial District of Pennsylvania will present the Third Annual FJD Pro Bono Publico Award to members of the bar who have provided exceptional pro bono service to the underprivileged in Philadelphia in cases before the FJD. The judges of the FJD nominate candidates and a committee of judges selects the recipients of the Pro Bono Publico Award. The awards ceremony to honor these recipients will be held on Thursday, Jan. 22.

At the ceremony, the FJD will also recognize all attorneys on the Pro Bono Roll of Honor who have provided pro bono services to litigants in the Philadelphia courts in 2008. Attorneys may become members of the Roll of Honor through a self-nominating process whereby attorneys submit their names along with a log of their pro bono services. The criteria for eligibility are as follows:

• The attorney must practice in Philadelphia County and must have provided services to a client or client group for a case before the FJD during 2008.

• The attorney must not be employed by an organization that has, as its primary purpose, the provision of free legal services to the underprivileged.

• The attorney must have provided direct delivery of legal services with no expectation of receiving a fee, to a client or client group that does not have the resources to employ compensated counsel, or the attorney must have worked to facilitate such effort by other attorneys.

The self-nominating form is available at under "News and Announcements." The deadline for nominations for the 2008 Pro Bono Roll of Honor is Nov. 24.

Brandeis CLE on Guantanamo Juveniles Oct. 15

The Louis D. Brandeis Law Society of Philadelphia will host a free CLE program on the representation of juvenile detainees at Guantanamo on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the U.S. Courthouse at 6th and Market streets.

Emergency Preparedness Workshop Oct. 30

The Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management, the Philadelphia Bar
Association and the Center City District will present a free workshop on emergency preparedness for Philadelphia businesses on Thursday, Oct. 30.

The program includes presentations from the Office of Emergency Management on business continuity planning, the corporate emergency access system and evacuation plans. The workshop will be held in the 11th floor Conference Cente4r of Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market St. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
