Bar Assn. to Welcome New Citizens at 'Law Day' Naturalization Ceremony

Audrey C. Talley, Chancellor-elect of the Philadelphia Bar Association, will be the guest speaker at a naturalization ceremony commemorating Law Day, Wednesday, May 1, at 10:30 a.m., in the U.S. Courthouse, 6th & Market Streets.

Judge James T. Giles of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania will preside over the ceremony.

Also at the event, the Edward F. Chacker Scholarship Award will be presented. The $1,000 award is presented by the Association's Young Lawyers Division to a Philadelphia high school senior who has written the best essay on a selected topic. The 2002 topic was "Letter to a Pen Pal: Our System of Justice."

Motions at the ceremony will be presented by Norman McCall, District Adjudications Officer, and Aida Ayala, Deputy Clerk, will administer the oath. A response to the court on behalf of the new citizens will be given by Bo Lim, formerly of Korea.

Seventy new citizens from 27 different countries will become naturalized.

A reception in their honor sponsored by the American Legion will be held following the ceremonies.

In celebration of Law Week, the Philadelphia Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division is hosting events throughout the week. Members of the YLD will go into classrooms to speak with students about being a lawyer and will also pair with doctors to speak with students about the legal and medical implications of drugs. In addition, the Bar Association will be hosting a Law Fair, tomorrow, at the Center Court in the Gallery Mall, from noon to 2 p.m., at which free legal advice and Kid I.D.s will be available.
