New York Times Columnist Maureen Dowd to Address Bar at Quarterly Luncheon

Maureen Dowd, columnist for The New York Times and winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary, will be the keynote speaker at the Philadelphia Bar Association's Quarterly Meeting and Luncheon on Monday, April 11. The event begins at noon at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, 12th and Market Streets.

Chancellor Andrew A. Chirls said U.S. Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr., the original speaker for the event, will not be able to attend due to Senate business in Washington, D.C. "We are indeed fortunate to have a speaker like Maureen Dowd available to us. We're looking forward to her remarks and will welcome Sen. Biden at a future date," Chirls said.

Also at the luncheon, the Association will honor Immediate-Past Chancellor Gabriel L.I. Bevilacqua in an annual tradition with the presentation of a gold box. The box is a replica of the one given to Andrew Hamilton for his successful defense of printer John Peter Zenger. The box, which is given only to former Chancellors, is inscribed, "Acquired not by money, but by character."

Dowd became a columnist on The New York Times Op-Ed page in 1995 after having served as a correspondent in the newspaper's Washington bureau since 1986. She has covered four presidential campaigns and served as White House correspondent. She also wrote a column, "On Washington," for The New York Times Magazine.

Dowd joined The New York Times as a metropolitan reporter in 1983. She began her career in 1974 as an editorial assistant for The Washington Star, where she later became a sports columnist, metropolitan reporter and feature writer. When the Star closed in 1981, she went to Time magazine.

Born in Washington D.C., Dowd received a B.A. degree in English literature from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. in 1973.

Tickets for the April Quarterly Meeting and Luncheon are $50 for members and $55 for non-members and are available online at
