Statement of Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Gaetan J. Alfano on the Passing of Judge Edmund B. Spaeth
Gaetan J. Alfano, Chancellor of the 12,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association, today issued the following statement on the passing of Judge Edmund B. Spaeth, retired president judge of the Pennsylvania Superior Court:
"Judge Spaeth was an incredible jurist who was both pragmatic and erudite in his approach to the law. His countless contributions continue to impact our legal community, but also reach throughout all of Philadelphia and beyond. Judge Spaeth played key roles in overseeing the creation of SEPTA, directing the City of Philadelphia to fund its pension plan based on sound actuarial principles, and declaring the Philadelphia prison unconstitutional in some practices and appointing a special master to recommend changes. In 2014, the Philadelphia Bar Association's Public Interest Section presented The Hon. Louis H. Pollak Award to Judge Spaeth, in recognition of his decades of service toward the public interest and access to justice."
