Gaetan J. Alfano, Chancellor of the 12,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association, today issued the following statement on the passing of Former Chancellor Joseph H. Foster:

"Joe was one of the most recognized and admired members of our legal community. He was personable and treated everybody as his best friend. He was also truly one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet."

Foster was Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 1981. When he was Chancellor, Foster placed a special emphasis on the work of the Association's Judicial Selection and Retention Commission, as 20 judicial vacancies were filled that year at every level of the judiciary.

Throughout his career, Foster has held many prominent roles throughout the legal community. In addition to serving as Chancellor, Foster also is a former president of the Pennsylvania Defense Institute; former vice-chair of the Supreme Court Rules Committee; former President of the Lawyers Club of Philadelphia; and fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Board of Trial Advocates.

In recent years, he served as counsel to White and Williams LLP. Last year, The Legal Intelligencer honored Foster with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

"His service to the community has made a lasting impact for generations and he truly will be missed," Alfano added.
