Young Lawyers Division to Hand Out Three Awards at March 25 Annual Meeting

The Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division will hand out awards to attorneys DaQuana L. Carter and Maria Feely as well as law firm Dechert LLP at the Division's Annual Meeting on Tuesday, March 25 at 5:30 p.m. at G, located below Davio's, 111 S. 17 Street.

Carter, an associate at Pepper Hamilton LLP, will receive the Young Lawyers Division's Craig M. Perry Service Award.

The award is presented annually to a young lawyer who has devoted substantial time and energy to community-oriented activities, including, but not limited to, pro bono and charity work. Perry was a member of the YLD Executive Committee who suffered an untimely death. He was very involved in community service and active in working on student-related and other YLD programs.

Carter currently serves as President-Elect for the Barristers' Association of Philadelphia as well as on committees for events such as the Barristers' Annual Scholarship Gala and the Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast. In 2007, she was named one of Pennsylvania's "Lawyers on the Fast Track" by American Lawyer Media.

A graduate of Villanova University, Carter serves as a mentor each year for a Villanova minority law school student. She is secretary of the Villanova Alumni Minority Society Board and assists with the fundraising efforts for the Villanova Minority Book Scholarship Fund.

Carter also assists with the planning of Villanova diversity programs such as last winter's "Why Diversity Matters."

Joseph A. Sullivan, Special Counsel and Director of Pro Bono Programs for Pepper Hamilton LLP said, "Dee Carter's service and commitment to civic and community activities, as well as pro bono services for those unable to obtain counsel are unparalleled, particularly for a young member of the legal community. Equally important, Ms. Carter provides all these services with a gracious and outgoing manner and a spirit of generosity that puts clients and friends at ease."

In addition to her work for Pepper Hamilton's clients, Carter is an active member of Pepper Hamilton's Pro Bono Committee and assists in building support and enthusiasm for pro bono at the firm. In 2006 and 2007, she was a member of the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania Pro Bono Roll of Honor. She has done pro bono work in supplemental social security income, kinship adoption and prisoner civil rights.

Feeley, a partner at Pepper Hamilton LLP, will receive the Young Lawyers Division's F. Sean Peretta Service Award.

The Peretta Service Award is given annually to a member of the legal community who exhibits exceptional community service.

"I had the good fortune of co-chairing the Philadelphia Bar Association's Women in the Profession Committee with Maria. During the year we co-chaired the Committee, I had the opportunity to observe her leadership, good judgment and passion for addressing the issues facing women lawyers. There is no one more worthy of receiving this prestigious award than Maria," said Roberta D. Liebenberg of Fine, Kaplan and Black, R.P.C.

Feeley is a newly elected member of the Bar's Board of Governors. In addition to her work at Pepper Hamilton LLP, Feeley is an adjunct professor of business law at Rosemont College. She also serves as a mentor to young women who attend the university.

Dechert LLP will receive the YLD Vision Award at the Division's Annual Meeting.

The YLD Vision Award is presented by the Young Lawyers Division annually to an organization—whether law firm, business corporation, non profit, or other group—that has provided outstanding support to the YLD in the fulfillment of its mission: to promote and preserve the interests of young lawyers, improve the quality of the legal system, provide a forum for the exchange of views among young lawyers, encourage the professional development of young lawyers through educational and service programs, participate in the growth and advancement of the legal profession, and encourage young lawyers to represent deserving clients on a pro bono basis.

Dechert sponsored the YLD Holiday Party in 2006 and 2007. This year's annual meeting will welcome YLD Chair Scott P. Sigman, an associate at Bochetto & Lentz, P.C. and recognize 2007 Chair Alan Nochumson for his year of service. The cost of the event, which is open to the public, is $35.00, and includes an open bar and heavy hors d'oeuvres. This event will be co-hosted by the Young Advocates for Mural Arts (YAMA).
