Marketing Corner: Year-End Growth Tips

By Kimberly Alford Rice

It is early November and there are less than two full months left of this year! How time flies!

Adapted from notes of business management coach Kathleen Cashman, below are just a few tips that may help as you wind your year down and begin planning for 2012:
1. Do something different – in fact, do 5 things that make you feel uncomfortable (but enable you to grow)
2. Re-connect with a friend this week (enjoy the experience)
3. New connections: take 3-5 of the new connections you have gathered in the past month and do something with them personally – not a newsletter but a call
4. Remember gratitude – are there some people who are helping you build your practice that you want to thank – send a note – not an email – stand out and speak words of gratitude.
5. How are you really doing? Call 5-7 of your contacts/referral sources and make appointments to have the “how am I doing” conversation – engage them in your growth
6. Become Invaluable – find out how you can become a crucial member of your firm’s client teams – what can you do for them? What do they need? How can you become invaluable?
7. Reflect: The year is almost over – spend just a few minutes creating the lists: what I did well this year and want to do again next year. What I did not focus on this year but want to next year; What I want new next year; Thoughts and ideas list. As you begin to develop these lists – they will become the basis for your 2012 and beyond plans – if you have not started to develop these, it is now time to do so. If you need help, let me know.

Continued Growth!

Temple-LEAP/YLD Mock Trial “Boot Camp” Dec. 3

The students then have the opportunity to break up into smaller groups to practice what they have just learned by working with pairs of young lawyers classrooms of five to ten students before re-convening to watch demonstrations of the skills they practiced performed by experienced lawyers, judges, and mock trialers. The YLD needs your help to make this year’s camp a success. Please contact Paul Kaufman at Paul.Kaufman2@usdoj.gov for more information or to volunteer as a lecturer or break-out session leader.

Volunteers Sought for LegalLine in November

The Young Lawyers Division is looking for sponsors and volunteers for our monthly Legal Line program for November 16. Legal Line is one of the many community service programs the YLD hosts. It takes place on the third Wednesday of every month at the Bar Association headquarters at 11th and Market Street from 5 to 8 p.m. Area residents call in for the volunteers' advice on just about any area of the law, including personal injury, domestic relations, bankruptcy, landlord-tenant and employment issues. If the caller needs further assistance after speaking with a volunteer, they are directed to the Bar Association's Lawyer Referral and Information Service.

This year, the YLD has been fortunate to have a number of sponsors for Legal Line, such as the Family Law, Criminal Justice, Real Property and State Civil Litigation Sections of the Bar Association; The Barristers' Association and APABA-PA; and the law firms Segal McCambridge Singer & Mahoney and Ciardi Ciardi & Astin. Sponsors merely need to provide between 2 and 5 volunteer attorneys to man the phones. The Bar Association will provide food and drink for the evening.

Legal Line will be held on Nov. 16. If your firm or organization is interested in sponsoring, or if you are interested in volunteering, please contact Melanie Taylor, Chair-Elect of the YLD at Melanie.Taylor@phila.gov.

Public Interest Law Day CLE and 20th Anniversary Celebration Dec. 1

Delivering public interest law to poor and disadvantaged citizens is a job that is largely undertaken by the more than thirty public interest law organizations in the Philadelphia area, as well as the numerous volunteer pro bono attorneys. Public Interest Law Day is designed to assist these practitioners and their colleagues throughout Pennsylvania in continuing to provide high-quality legal services to this under-served population. In addition to attorneys in public interest practice, this course will be of interest to pro bono practitioners and private practice attorneys who are interested in learning more about public interest law and other timely issues affecting the pro bono community.

Planned by public interest lawyers for public interest lawyers, this program focuses on issues that are currently hot topics in the practice of public interest law.
