Steve LaCheen was the epitome of The Philadelphia Lawyer. He was the longest-serving member on the editorial board of The Philadelphia Lawyer, serving almost 50 years. Steve was a vibrant member of the editorial board. His unapologetic love for Philadelphia, the law, and the magazine was infectious. As a regular contributor to The Philadelphia Lawyer, Steve’s work could fill volumes. His artful storytelling was truly captivating.
In 2018, as the youngest and then newest member of the editorial board, I was tasked with interviewing Steve. Initially, I was concerned about the gap in age and experience and whether we could relate to each other. Our passion for the law and people quickly bridged the gap. The interview was supposed to be 10 questions, but in true Steve LaCheen fashion, he drew me in. I wanted to know more about his abundant life and experiences. To my surprise, Steve was open and accepting to the newest generations of lawyers. Steve shared invaluable wisdom and advice. He was open to new ideas and often encouraged debate by those with differing perspectives.
Steve left an indelible mark on the profession and people. Our board was collectively shocked and saddened when we learned that Steve died May 3rd after a short illness; he remained a vibrant and vocal member of the board to the end. The Philadelphia Lawyer editorial board dedicates a large portion of this issue in Steve’s memory, recognizing his contributions to humanity, the profession, and to both The Philadelphia Lawyer magazine and the legacy of excellence that encapsulates that term.
Steve’s words and legacy will continue to live in the pages of this magazine for generations to come. Several unpublished articles he authored before his death will be included in future issues and he will continue to be recognized as “editor in memoriam” on our masthead.
