"When I was a second or third-year lawyer, a friend of mine suggested that I should run for the Young Lawyers Division Executive Committee. At the time, I had no idea what that was, but I decided to follow her advice…I’m thrilled that I did! What ensued was an experience with the Philadelphia Bar Association that has tremendously improved my professional and personal life. Even as a young lawyer, my involvement with the Philadelphia Bar Association has afforded me the opportunity to network and make connections that have improved my practice and brought in business to my firm. I also had access to members of the judiciary at the local, state and federal level, which significantly improved my stature within my firm and with my clients. Through various mentorships and shared experiences, I’ve had the chance to learn from other lawyers, and I’ve made lifelong friends, who have truly enriched me both personally and professionally."
Joe Messa
Attorney, Messa & Associates, P.C.
"While I have been in leadership with the Philadelphia trial lawyers for some time, the Philadelphia Bar Association gives me the ability to network with lawyers in other practice areas and members of the court. I value my membership to the Philadelphia Bar Association as it has connected me with a broad assortment of talented attorneys, some who practice injury law, and others who do not. It’s been incredibly beneficial connecting with all types of attorneys rather than just those who practice similar law as myself."
Ryan Raymond
Attorney, Raymond IP Firm LLC
“My membership is valuable to me because I am able to collaborate with fellow attorneys and gain knowledge through organized and thoughtful CLEs. It has helped me meet and learn from other attorneys in various practice areas. Now, when I have clients that have questions that are outside of my wheelhouse, I can pick up the phone to ask another attorney or send a referral. I would absolutely recommend anyone to join this incredible community. As a solo practitioner, I value the benefits of attending amazing events and collaborating with attorneys.”
Courtney Gorman
Paralegal & Notary, JustLaws PLLC
“Being a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association for the past two years has skyrocketed my professional career in ways I didn't know were possible. Not only is the networking aspect personally rewarding, but it has also enhanced my service to the community. Serving my community and giving back is a major part of my life, and the Philadelphia Bar Association has guided me in the right direction to do so. Being involved in several committees (the Executive Committee for the Real Property Section, the Women in the Profession and Women's Rights Committee, the Wellness Committee, and now starting the first Paralegal and Legal Professionals Committee) has made a monumental difference in my networking skills and my ability to seek assistance and guidance from other knowledgeable professionals. Without attending events and meeting other members, I would not have become involved with other organizations, such as Philly VIP and Community Legal Services, which have brought such joy and faith into my life.”
Yolanda French Lollis
Managing Attorney, AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania
“My membership to the Philadelphia Bar Association is valuable to me because of the community that exists within the Public Interest Section and its subcommittees. It has given me access to lawyers who share both my values and my goals for direct client representation. I recommend being a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association because of the opportunity to have a voice in the legal community. In addition, participation within the Sections provide an opportunity to develop leadership skills in a supportive environment. The benefits of the Association that I value the most are the free CLE credits and Decisis, the free legal research tool.”
Kevin M. Levy
Associate, Saul Ewing LLP
“I have been a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association since my first year as an attorney, and the Bar has provided a valuable sense of community for me a junior lawyer in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Bar Association is an equalizer, where practitioners from across practice areas, years of legal tenure, and life perspective have opportunities to come together, share experiences, learn from one another, and promote justice and good government in the City of Philadelphia. Through my involvement in the Philadelphia Bar Association, I’ve had great opportunity to work with lawyers across practice areas, to grow my social and professional networks and join an organization that has true ability to make an impact on the City in which we live and work.”
Jahlee Hatchett
Attorney, Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin, P.C.
“My membership to the Philadelphia Bar Association is valuable because it provides unparalleled exposure to the Philadelphia legal community. As such, the Philadelphia Bar Association allows attorneys and judges to build relationships and gain information that would otherwise be inaccessible. Being a member of the Association helped elevate my career and grow my network by providing opportunities to meet people and develop meaningful relationships. I first joined the Bar Association as a member of the YLD. Today, I routinely meet and engage with people that I first met through YLD. I would recommend being a member of the Association because it offers so many great services such as CLEs, forums, luncheons and more. In addition, the Association provides an outlet to fellowship with other members of the bar and judiciary that would otherwise be nonexistent.”
Arly Smith-Pearson
Attorney, Philadelphia Legal Assistance
Membership in the Philadelphia Bar Association is valuable to me because it gives me the opportunity to work on important issues that impact my community. In my practice, I work in one subject area, but as a member of the Public Interest Section and the Board of Governors I am able to think about and contribute to and work on a variety of issues that I would never have been able to address otherwise.
Megan Watson
Partner, BKW Family Law LLC
When I started practicing in 1999, it wasn’t even a question that I would join the Association. My partners made sure that happened as they were quite involved, and, as it turns out, the three of us each were chair of the Family Law Section at some point in our careers. I have met many wonderful professionals from all areas of the law which means that any time I need information, I have someone to call. The diversity of the Bar Association means I have gained a diversity of insight and perspective. The interaction with the bench has meant that the members can make real change in our judicial system. The Bar Association has given me that access that I would not have had without it.
Michael P. Zanan
Member, Cozen O'Connor
Membership in the Philadelphia Bar Association has afforded me the opportunity to positively serve the local legal community through educational and charitable programming while also opening many doors with respect to networking opportunities, client referrals, leadership skill development and personal friendships. Through my engagement in the Bar Association, I have been provided with an even more expansive network of qualified legal professionals who care about what they do and who I can call on at any time. I always strongly encourage junior attorneys that I work with to join the Bar Association.
Beth Perez

I have been a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association since I became a lawyer. It has connected me to colleagues, leaders in the Philadelphia legal community and introduced me to leadership opportunities I did not even know were out there. The Philadelphia Bar Association is so tight knit and strong. Everyone knows everyone else and is so welcoming. As a director of pro bono services at a non-profit organization, I am always looking to connect with new attorneys and firms and the Philadelphia Bar Association is the place to be. The events, staff, and leadership are so welcoming and encourage collaboration and connection between members. It has been my most valuable asset for my job!
Jordan Freeman
Trial Attorney, Matkoff, Shengold, Berman & Goodnow, P.C.
I moved to Philadelphia in 2017 armed with nothing more than a license to practice and ambition. The association has placed me in rooms and introduced me to individuals within the law and around the City of Philadelphia, which has allowed me to plant roots, grow, and flourish as a legal practitioner in Philadelphia. Membership opens doors for opportunities, jobs, and relationships that may not have been available before. The association provides services for the whole attorney, socially, educationally, and philanthropically, through service projects.
Andre Webb

Through my continued involvement, I have refined my advocacy and leadership skills, developed strong professional relationships, and embraced opportunities to give back to the legal community.

As an in-house attorney and corporate executive, my membership in the Philadelphia Bar Association keeps me connected to the broader legal community in a meaningful way. I especially value the Bar Association’s commitment to community service, which aligns with my passion for using the law to create positive social impact.
Participating in these initiatives allows me to give back while staying engaged with fellow professionals who share a dedication to service. It’s a powerful reminder that the legal profession is not just about practice — it’s about purpose.

A Philadelphia Bar Association membership can really fast-track building your network. The exposure to other attorneys, judges, and legal/judicial administrators outside of the constraints of practice are unparalleled.
