By Brian Levinson

Brian Levinson founded Alevistar Legal Search (an official partner of the Philadelphia Bar Association) in 2003 and serves as its managing partner. For more than two decades, Brian has worked with many of the top law firms and corporations throughout the Philadelphia area, helping them attract exceptional legal talent. He also partners closely with attorneys, paralegals, and legal support professionals to guide them toward their next career opportunity.

Over the years, Brian has developed long-standing relationships across the region, earning a reputation as a trusted career and recruitment adviser. Known for his responsiveness, discretion, and thoughtful approach, he ensures every conversation is handled with the utmost confidentiality.

Brian has been invited to speak and write on numerous legal recruitment and career development topics, and he’s a frequent judge for The Legal Intelligencer’s “Lawyers on the Fast Track” Awards. A graduate of Widener University, Brian lives in Montgomery County with his wife, Stephanie — a registered dietitian — and their two sons. Outside the office, he enjoys family time, traveling, exploring new restaurants, and cheering on the Eagles, Sixers, & Phillies.

With the new year approaching quickly, we asked Brian a few questions about what hiring trends legal professionals should keep an eye on to make sure 2026 is a successful year.

Q: What legal hiring trends should professionals be on the lookout for in 2026?

A: We’re seeing a real shift in what both firms and candidates value — it’s less about volume and more about versatility.

  1. Tech and legal skills are merging.
AI, automation, and data governance aren’t just buzzwords anymore — they’re part of daily practice. Lawyers who understand how to leverage technology are standing out, and firms are updating job specs to reflect that.

  1. Specialized practice areas are booming.
We’re seeing strong demand in privacy, data security, ESG, and AI compliance. The generalists still have a place, but the real momentum is in niche expertise that aligns with emerging regulations and risk.

  1. Hybrid work is here to stay — but it’s evolving.
“Hybrid 2.0” means more intention behind when people come in and how teams collaborate. Firms that clearly define flexibility — instead of treating it like a perk — will keep attracting the best people.

  1. Measurable impact matters.
Hiring managers want to see results, not just responsibilities — metrics, tools you’ve used, outcomes you’ve delivered. The best candidates can show how they’ve added value, not just where they’ve worked.

Bottom line: The market’s maturing — and success, whether you’re hiring or job-hunting, will come down to adaptability, specialization, and the ability to show real results.

Q: What’s your advice to law students on the hunt for their first role?

A: My biggest piece of advice? Don’t just chase prestige — chase fit. The first job you take doesn’t define your whole career, but it can set the tone for how you learn, grow, and build confidence.

Look for an environment where you’ll actually get to do things — not just observe. A smaller firm, boutique, or in-house internship can sometimes offer more hands-on experience than a big-name shop.

Also, stay curious and adaptable. The legal world is evolving fast with AI, compliance, and data privacy reshaping how work gets done. Even a little exposure to technology, business, or project management can help you stand out.

And finally, build relationships early. Your classmates, professors, and mentors are your future network — treat every interaction as part of your professional reputation. The best opportunities often come from people who already know and trust you.

Bottom line: Focus less on finding the “perfect” first job and more on finding a place where you can learn, contribute, and build momentum.

Q: Why is it important for an attorney to partner with a legal recruiter to find their next role?

A: A good legal recruiter can be a real game-changer. Attorneys are usually great at building cases — not necessarily at marketing themselves or navigating a shifting job market. That’s where we come in.

Recruiters have a bird’s-eye view of the market — we know which firms are growing, which ones quietly need help, and where your skills will actually translate into opportunity. We can open doors that aren’t even advertised yet.

At Alevistar Legal Search, we see our role as a trusted advisor, not just a matchmaker. Because we’re deeply rooted in the Philadelphia legal community, we have real relationships with the firms and hiring managers here. That local insight lets us match attorneys with roles that genuinely fit their skills, goals, and personalities — not just their résumés.

We also help attorneys tell their story in a way that resonates. Many candidates undersell their experience or focus on the wrong details. A recruiter can frame your background strategically, prep you for interviews, and negotiate compensation from a position of strength.

And perhaps most importantly, we act as a sounding board. Sometimes it’s not just about finding a job — it’s about finding the right one. A recruiter who truly listens can help you think long-term about culture, work-life balance, and career growth.

Bottom line: Partnering with a recruiter isn’t about handing over control — it’s about gaining insight, advocacy, and access to opportunities you might never find on your own.

Q: What do firms gain by working with a legal recruiter?

A: Working with a legal recruiter saves firms time, energy, and often a few headaches. Most hiring partners and administrators already have full plates — they don’t have the bandwidth to sift through hundreds of résumés or chase candidates who aren’t the right fit. A recruiter can streamline that entire process.

At Alevistar Legal Search, we act as an extension of the firm’s hiring team. Because we know the Philadelphia legal market inside and out, we understand each firm’s culture, practice strengths, and the nuances that make a candidate thrive there. That local knowledge helps us deliver candidates who aren’t just qualified on paper — they fit.

We also bring reach and discretion. Some of the best attorneys aren’t actively looking, but they’ll take our call because they trust us to present opportunities thoughtfully and confidentially. That allows firms to tap into a much deeper and higher-quality talent pool.

And finally, we help firms tell their own story more effectively. Recruiting isn’t just about finding candidates — it’s about positioning the firm as a place top talent wants to join. We can help refine that message so it resonates with today’s attorneys.

Bottom line: Firms that partner with a good recruiter gain efficiency, insight, and access — three things that make all the difference in a competitive market like Philadelphia.

Q: How is Alevistar Legal Search different from any other legal recruiting firm?

A: What really sets Alevistar Legal Search apart is our combination of deep local roots and a truly personal approach. We’re not a national agency trying to fit people into boxes — we’re part of the Philadelphia legal community. We know the firms, the hiring partners, and the culture of this market inside and out.

That local focus allows us to make matches that actually work — not just on paper, but in real life. We take the time to understand both sides of the equation: what a firm really needs beyond the job description, and what a candidate really wants from their next move.

We also believe in transparency and partnership. Whether we’re advising a firm or representing an attorney, we’re honest, responsive, and invested in long-term relationships — not quick placements. Many of our clients and candidates come back to us years later when it’s time for their next chapter, and that’s the best compliment we can get.

Bottom line: Alevistar isn’t just about making placements — it’s about building trust, strengthening the Philadelphia legal community, and helping good people find the right professional home.

Closing Thoughts

At the heart of Alevistar Legal Search is a simple philosophy — recruiting is about people, not transactions. Brian Levinson and his team take pride in building lasting relationships that strengthen both careers and law firms across the Philadelphia legal community.

Whether helping an attorney make a strategic career move or guiding a firm toward its next key hire, Alevistar’s approach is grounded in honesty, insight, and personal connection. It’s that combination of experience and genuine care that continues to set Alevistar apart — and keeps clients and candidates coming back, year after year.
