On the 220th anniversary of the document that guarantees the essential rights of American citizens, approximately 120 people from 43 different countries will take the oath of citizenship at a special Bill of Rights Day Naturalization Ceremony sponsored by the Philadelphia Bar Association on Thursday, December 15 at 10:30 a.m. in the Ceremonial Courtroom of the U.S. Courthouse, Sixth and Market Streets.
Judge Michael M. Baylson of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania will preside over the ceremony, which will also include remarks from John Savoth, the incoming Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, and distinguished guest speaker Leigh M. Skipper, Esq., Chief Federal Defender for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
The Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on Dec. 15, 1791 and contains the first 10 amendments, including freedom of speech, the right to practice any religion, the right to assemble, the right to protest and the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury.
