Chancellor Jen Coatsworth joins forces with the Women in Profession Committee and Women's Rights Committee to bring light to 'The Motherhood Penalty' and its Impact on the Legal Field. Presented in conjunction with the Montgomery Bar Association's Women in Law Committee.

Featuring Roberta Liebenberg, Stephanie Scharf and Paulette Brown discussing their new study, "Legal Careers of Parents and Child Caregivers: Results and Best Practices from a National Study of the Legal Profession”
The recent study, written for the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession and drawing on a survey of more than 8,000 attorneys, finds that many parents – mothers in particular – experienced negative impacts on their careers due to having children. More than half of working mothers (60%) who responded to the survey said they were perceived as less committed to their career by their employers.
The event will include a presentation by the study authors and a panel discussion on trends, personal experiences and potential best practices that could be implemented here in Philadelphia.
Panelists include:
- Amal Bass, co-executive director and director of policy & advocacy, Women’s Law Project
- Keisha Hudson, chief defender, Defender Association of Philadelphia
- Ashley Lynam, co-chair, Montgomery McCracken and the first woman and youngest person to her position in the firm's history
- Gabe Holdsman, senior vice president and global general counsel, PTC Therapeutics
