The Ins and Outs of Discovery Court

Program Originally Presented Monday, March 2, 2026

The Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas announced that Discovery Court hearings returned to in-person on February 9, 2026. The Court noted that in recent years, younger and newly admitted lawyers have had increasingly fewer opportunities to appear in court. Thus, one of the goals of this change is to help these lawyers to acquire the skills necessary to become experienced litigators.

The discovery process is a method by which opposing counsel exchange and learn about the information, documents, witnesses and evidence for an upcoming trial. While information learned during the discovery process can be helpful for litigants, those unfamiliar with the discovery process may find it difficult to prepare and respond to discovery motions especially if they do not have the opportunity to appear in court.

This moderated panel presentation highlights key issues to consider when visiting the Court such as, hearing requirements, hearing procedures, hearing materials, motions for sanctions, and guidance from the Administrative Judge, Discovery Court Director, and experienced civil practitioners.
